November 5 - 111, discussion #1

Provide an example of creativity from your own experience. How does it fit with the chapter's discussion of creativity?

Creativity is defined as “when you do something new, different, and helpful, it shows creativity” (p.162). going against the grain and doing something that is original is the definition of being creative. People who are creative see the world differently and can create thoughts and make them come to life. “Some people see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say, why not?” Robert F. Kennedy. This quote explains how people who are creative and those who are innovators think. I have never seen myself as a creative person because when people think of creative they usually look at creativity as in art and I do not own in artistic skills. When it comes to groups I can be very creative. “Teamwork is a creative process” and this is very true because not only do I excel in groups I also tend to become more creative. I think that the amount of ideas flowing and diversity of a group can definitely builds creativity.

  1. I totally agree with you in regards to your self-perception of not being creative. I never found myself to be an “artsy” person or have the capabilities to draw or paint. Constantly throughout projects and assignments, I use to dread anytime the word “creativity” got brought as a grading requirement. Despite this, what I have found out recently about creativity is that there are many ways of being creative beyond pictures or illustrations and that whatever we do does require some type of creativity to be inspired. Like you mentioned, teamwork is a part of creativity since it brings together different ideas that can come together and create a physical or nonphysical form of creativity.

  2. Hey Micah,

Wow, that is a great quote that you chose to include in your post. It is definitely a good representation of how creative thinkers can be considered innovators. I think that is a good point you bring up that many times, creativity is associated with artistic ability; however, the reading this week showed that creativity is relevant in many other areas of life as well, such as thinking and working in a group. I also agree with you that working in a team promotes creativity as people are able to share and build ideas with one another. Diversity is also a factor that helps build creativity as with different background comes different views and perspectives.
