Week 8 discussion part 2

Give a personal example where you have had selective attention. Why do you think that is? Is there a way you were able to overcome it?

For the most part I believe that when I do not want to hear information given to me I will let it go in one ear and out the other. I have a father who I believe likes to hear himself speak and oftentimes like to lecture me. I love my father but being 27 years old and having been out of his care for almost 10 years I like to believe I know what I am doing. He often preached to me about family, religion and other concerns he may have. The problem with me is that I am very independent and I believe that I am usually right. So when anyone tries to tell me otherwise I usually will choose not to pay attention. If I am listening to something I am interested in or need to hear then I will choose to be attentive. I don't see it as a problem, I mostly see it as a selective act that I have. if I want to hear or pay attention to something I will, if not then i will ignore it.

  1. Hey there! I believe that we all give selective attention especially when it comes down with our parents. I think I have been applying this concept with them since I was in elementary school. One reason is because at times I do not think what they are saying is important. For example he tells me that I should not go out too late on school nights and lectures me on how I should sleep more. Once I hear those opening words, I tend to shift my attention to something else. I don’t see this as a problem either but I see how it might be important to actually give our full attention someone. Anyways, good job this week!

  2. Hi Micah! Good discussion! I like how you went straight to the example and you also provided a really interesting example that people can relate to. I am the same way. When anyone tells me something that I don't want to hear, I start to tune them out. Sometimes this can be a really bad characteristic because it can cause the speaker to become irritated. Other members in my family are also the same way. When we all start to hear things that we don't want to, it causes us to get mad at one another and become irritated. This is definitely a good week for discussions like these because it allows us to find communications mistakes that everyone can work on. Great job at pointing this out!

  3. Hi Jayden, I enjoyed reading your post. I like the way you hit the topic head on starting from your father. At your age any adult who preaches about ways to live life sounds boring lecture. Yes we all tend to give selective attention to only the topics that interest us. Not only that in our everyday life we go by selective attention in several instances like when we drive, or when we choose to talk to one person out of many. The reason being there is so much happening around us that it is impossible to focus on each and everything.

  4. Hi Micah,

I agree with where you are coming from in regards to selective attention and feel that this is true for most people. We are much more willing to listen when the discussion involves a topic we are interested in; however, if it is not of interest in us, we are more likely to zone out and direct our attention elsewhere. I believe that everybody has selective listening to some degree since selective hearing is basically an unconscious action. Most often I will have the intentions of listening yet once they have finished their sentence, I realize I did not retain much or any of what was actually said.

  5. Hi Jayden Caleb, great job with your response to this question. I can relate to how if there is someone talking to me and it is information that I don’t particularly care for I will just let it go in one ear and out the other. I am also the type of person who feels like I am independent and am usually right. Because of this quality, I have a tendency to stop paying attention if I am being lectured. So I can understand how you, being independent as well, can lose yourself off to being lectured. I thought you did a great job, keep up the good work.

    1. Hi AEfitness,

Thank you and I am the exact same way, I think im right constantly until proved otherwise and then I will continue to make my point. I also will stop paying attention if the information is boring to me. Thank you
