Are there group norms at SJSU? What are they? In the group of individuals that you spend time with, are there group norms? What are they? In both cases, how did you identify these norms? How did you adapt to these norms?Norms—Expectations & Assumptions about Behavior, represented in activities & behaviors that occur regularly. Recognize a Norm through negative feedback when it is violated.
I have not had the pleasure of being a part of any groups at SJSU but I can elaborate on groups I have been apart of. A group that I feel connected to at SJSU is the Communication department. I have taken classes other than Comm classes and you can tell the difference between those who are a Comm major and those who are not. For example I took a Business class and there was one other Comm major and we instantly clicked. Business majors think in terms of numbers and hard facts. They are trained to be straightforward, fact based and very conservative. Comm majors are outspoken, argumentative and are very outgoing. We tend to be leaders and very vocal about our opinions. The friends I have the same set of norms. My best friend is a Bio Chem major and he is just as loud and outspoken as I am. I think norms are a part of who we are and they are also learned as well. I have always been the life of a party and love people and Comm was in me. Some people think and act differently and their major reflects who they are.

Hey Micah,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post, and I can totally relate to what you are saying. I think the norms you stated for people who are communication studies majors are very true and on point. We are mostly all definitely outspoken and outgoing. It's interesting that you mentioned that your friends all tend to have the same norms, because that is the same for my group of friends. I really like the example you used about you and your friend and your different majors, but how you both still have the same personality norm since you are friends. Most of my friends have different majors, but we are all still pretty similar when it comes to our personalities. I also have never really been a part of any specific groups at San Jose State, but the one group that I do identify myself with is the Communication Studies Department. Good job on your post!

Hey Micah,
ReplyDeleteGood stuff. I can definitely relate to what you said about the norms among Comm majors. In all of the Comm classes that I've taken at SJSU, most of the people in those classes are Comm majors, and those classes have always been much livelier in terms of discussion and social interaction than in the other kinds of classes that I've taken. I've sat in English and History classes where no one said anything to each other or responded to the professor's questions, but Comm majors are almost always more outgoing and willing to discuss and debate (implicit norm).
Hi Micah,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with your thought about communication majors. Most communication majors are more outspoken. Some of my friends that are communication majors also obtain those characteristics. According to my observation, they know the “right” way to talk to different types of people.
On the other hand, I believe some business majors are also outspoken. Although I am not as outspoken as other business majors, numerous business classes require presentations in front of the class. In management classes, business majors learn more about the tools and skills needed to lead a team.
I enjoyed reading your blog because it raised more awareness about different opinions that other students with different majors have. Great job!
Hi Micah,
ReplyDeleteMy response to the prompt was similar to yours since I as well do not consider myself part of any particular “group” at San Jose State. However, I do agree with you that I group I could associate myself with would be the Communication department. I hadn’t thought of that as a “group” before but after you mentioning it, I definitely feel that I can affiliate with the other students who are communication majors at San Jose State. I definitely agree that there is a difference between students of different majors; however, the classes I am taking now are mostly communication classes which makes the dynamic of the class more fun and interesting as most of the students are working toward a common goal.
